Warrior wrestlers start new year with wins
The Marion/Peabody-Burns combined high school wrestling team started the new year in winning style Thursday, with dual meet wins against Hesston and Halstead in Hesston, then followed up with strong individual performances Saturday at the Herington invitational tournament.
Warrior wrestlers Tylor Neil, Charlie Holub, Hank Collett, John Barr III, and Brad Klenda picked up wins over their Swather counterparts, as Marion outscored Hesston 51-21 for the team victory.
Barr, wrestling at 152 pounds, needed only 32 seconds to pin Hesston's Shawn Moffett, and Neil, Collett, and Klenda nailed down fall wins as well.
In the second team match of the evening, Marion defeated Halstead 46-31.
Ben Leppke, Doug Schroeder, and Klenda all pinned their opponents for wins, while Oliver Whitney cruised to a convincing 19-7 decision.
Schroeder, the Warrior entry in the 275-pound division, vanquished Francisco Ayala in lightning speed, taking only 16 seconds for the pin.
Barr III was tops among Warrior wrestlers at Herington, going 3-0 to take first place in the 152-pound division.
Dillon Wildin won three of his four matches to finish third in the 130-pound class.
Klenda rebounded from an opening round loss to score two consecutive victories, and secured fourth place despite a final round loss to Hillsboro's Jacob Yoder.
The Warriors hit the mats again Friday and Saturday, traveling to Halstead to compete in the Halstead invitational.
