Warriors crush Lyons, Haven at home

Sports reporter

Hector Cardenas and the Marion-Florence/Peabody-Burns wrestlers didn't disappoint.

The junior joked he didn't want to embarrass himself in front of the home crowd, and Thursday, neither he nor the team did.

Cardenas was one of five wrestlers who went 2-0 in the home double dual in a 58-6 victory against Lyons, and a 52-17 drubbing of Haven.

"It felt pretty good," Cardenas said, "especially because this was the first time my dad could come and watch me."

It must have felt pretty good for the other Warrior wrestlers as well, as the team won 13 of 16 matches, with 11 pins.

"They did what they've been doing," head coach Chad Adkins said. "They've wrestled pretty good lately."

In the Lyons match, there were only three matches in the first six weight classes, as Andy Shipman (119 pounds), Adam Regnier (130), and Dillon Wildin (135) all recorded pins.

Regnier trailed 13-6 before turning the tables on his opponent.

Tylor Neil picked up a 9-1 victory at 140 pounds, and Cardenas won his first match in the 160-pound match-up with a pin in two minutes, 23 seconds.

The final Marion victory was Derek Riggs' 35-second pin in the 285-pound, heavyweight match.

Haven provided more competition than Lyons — but not much.

Marion still jumped ahead 40-0 with two forfeit victories, pins by Randy Regnier (112), Shipman, Wildin, and Neil, and a 12-4 victory by Holub.

Riggs won his second match with a 21-second pin, giving him a 2-0 record although being on the mat for only 56 total seconds.

With the Eureka regional looming Friday and Saturday, Adkins is happy with his wrestlers, but doesn't want any kind of a letdown.

"We've got to keep focusing and getting better," Adkins said. "We cannot drop the intensity level."

Tournament champions

The Warriors continued their success into the weekend with a championship victory at the Chase County Invitational.

Nine out of 11 wrestlers placed in the top four, led by Dillon Wildin (135 pounds) and Cardenas (160), who won their respective weight classes with 3-0 records.

"We wrestled very well," Adkins said. "We are getting geared up for regionals and state."

It was the second tournament championship this season for the Warriors.

Randy Regnier (112), Shipman (119), Cody Wildin (125), Neil (140), and Holub (145), were all 2-1 and took second place in their classes.

Riggs (215) was 2-1 as well, but finished third in the 215-pound class.

Adam Regnier (130) was the final placer, going 1-2 and finishing in fourth.

Collett (152) was 1-2 but did not place, and Kukuk (171) was 0-2.
