Warriors end regular season; prepare to host post-season events

In the last track meet of the regular season, Marion High School track coach Grant Theirolf was pleased with many performances from both his girls' and boys' team.

MHS now prepares to play host Friday to the Mid-Central Activities Association League meet, and May 19 to a regional meet.

Competing Thursday in the Hesston invitational, the boys took fourth and the girls sixth in the 10-team event.

Jeremy Vondenkamp and Gavin Moore led the way for the boys' team which racked up 75 points, just five behind third place Hillsboro.

Vondenkamp, who signed this past week to run hurdles at Benedictine College in Atchison, dominated once again. His time of 15.4 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, and 40.45 seconds in the 300m hurdles both took first place.

"He will be a favorite going into the league meet Friday," Thierolf said.

Moore took first in the 3200m run with a time of 10 minutes, 17 seconds.

The team also placed in all of the relay events, taking second in the 4x800, third in the 4x400, and sixth in the 4x100.

"Our 4x800 relay looked very strong and will compete for league and regional honors," Thierolf said.

The girls amassed 41.5 points at Hesston and took sixth place.

Erin Carr was the lone first-place finisher on the team after running a season best 12.54 seconds in the 100m dash. She also was second in the 200m dash, and third in the triple jump.

"She continues to get better each week," Thierolf said.

Danielle Cope, who is looking to qualify for state for the second year in a row, ran a season best 12:30.2 in the 3200m run, good enough for second place.

Thierolf said the team is ready to host both events.

"We are rounding into shape quite well," he said, "and really look forward to the league and regional meets."
