Warriors experience success at regionals, state is next

With two top-five finishes Friday at the Marion 3A regional, the Marion High School track and field teams guaranteed there will be plenty of Warrior red and blue at the state track meet this weekend in Wichita.

The boys' team, led by senior Justin Heidebrecht, took third place with a total of 63 points.

Heidebrecht was one of two Marion boys to qualify for state in two events, and the only individual league champion.

His 800-meter dash time of two minutes, 1.72 seconds blew away the rest of the competition.

Sophomore Ryan Jones earned two spots at the state meet with a fourth-place finish in the 1600m run, and a first place finish, along with Heidebrecht, in the 4x800.

Sophomore Julia Zeiner earned 30 of her team's 47 points Friday with first-place finishes in the triple jump, long jump, and 300m hurdles.

She also was on the second-place 4x100m relay squad.

Senior Kalaya Jackson was the only other individual to qualify for state on the girls' team, after taking fourth in the triple jump.

She nearly made the cut in the long jump as well, finishing one spot out of state in fifth.

As a team the girls were fifth, just four points behind fourth-place Garden Plain.

Nick Klenda, Tylor Neil, Luke Gordon, and Charlie Holub also will compete at state.
