Warriors fall to Vikings

Sports reporter

It wasn't the best start to the season for the Marion High School softball team April 3 with two home losses to Smoky Valley, but there's plenty of time in the next two weeks to help the team focus on the future.

With two doubleheaders already rained out, the Warriors have three doubleheaders this week and next, although two of the six are junior varsity.

"We have plenty of time to get it together," head coach Sandy Black said.

It was a chilly evening April 3 for the start of the season, and didn't get much warmer for the Warriors. They fell behind early, and eventually lost the game, 10-1.

The second game proved much better on the offensive side, as the Warriors pounded out 15 runs. Unfortunately, the defense didn't fare as well, and MHS fell 24-15.

Black said it was a doubleheader the girls need to forget and move on. With plenty of ball to be played during the next two weeks, that shouldn't be hard.

"The girls just didn't come to play ball," she said.

However, she did see some positives come from the games.

"Our bats came alive in the second game," Black said. "Also, a couple of freshmen stepped in and played a little bit."

Still, Black knows the team is capable of playing better and is looking forward to the upcoming games.

After playing Haven Tuesday, the Warriors have a junior varsity game Thursday at home against Nickerson, and again a varsity game Friday at Nickerson. Monday they have a JV game at home against Council Grove, Thursday they are at home against Halstead, and Friday the team travels for a makeup game at Hillsboro.

It will be quite a few weeks, and Black said the added junior varsity games are great.

"We are just looking at them as extra games," she said.

That's because the Warriors do not have enough for a full junior varsity squad. The same girls playing in those games, also will be on the varsity squad.

The next 10 days will be a learning process for the Warriors, but it no doubt should prepare them for the home stretch of the season.

"We're looking forward to it," Black said.
