Warriors season comes to a close

It may have been a perfect game, but not for anyone on Marion-Florence/Peabody-Burns' side.

Augusta's Ashley Spalding retired all 12 Warrior batters she faced May 16 in a 15-0 victory in the first round of 4A regional play.

It was the second perfect game of the season for Spalding, who also added a home run that landed on Augusta Golf Course in the first inning.

The loss ended the season for the Warriors at 7-14. Augusta went on to win two more games and advance to the state tournament.

Spalding struck out nine of the 12 batters she faced, and allowed just three pop outs to first base.

Head coach Charlotte Waner was sad for her team, but was proud of them at the same time.

"We are a young team and we've improved," she said. "It's hard to remember that when you are struggling."

She told the players to keep their heads up and remember they ended the season on a good note with a doubleheader sweep of Wichita Collegiate.
