Warriors second victory as thrilling as first

Sports reporter

The second victory of the season for the Marion High School softball team proved as dramatic as the first.

Erica Geis scored the winning run April 24 in the bottom of the seventh inning after Austin Percell reached on an error, giving Marion a 7-6 victory against Wichita Collegiate.

The Warriors had blown a 5-3 lead in the sixth, when the Spartans put three runs on the board to lead by one.

However, MHS answered back in the bottom of the inning.

Catcher Lanna Carroll singled in Kristen Waner, who had reached on an error, to tie the game.

The defense held Collegiate in the top of the seventh, before Geis scored the winning run.

Coach Sandy Black was happy for the victory, but knows her team is always trying to get better.

"I'm pleased with the way we fought back," she said. "But we did not play to our potential."

"Our bats are starting to come around, we just had too many errors."

That was the demise of the Warriors in game two against the Spartans, in which the defense broke down with numerous errors, as Marion fell 22-12.

"We just can't get our bats and gloves going in the same game," Black said.

Hoisington

While the Warriors' defense was OK in a doubleheader Friday at Hoisington, their bats struggled with Cardinal pitching, dropping two games, 8-0 and 7-2.

The Cardinals jumped ahead 7-0 after two innings, and the damage was done.

Kari Tajchman recorded the only hit for the Warriors in the game one loss.

Morgan Cady and Erica Geis provided the offense for Marion in game two. Both recorded singles after walks to Lauren Helmer and Percell that cut the lead to five. However, the 7-2 lead for Hoisington would prove to be the final score, as MHS fell to 2-10 on the season.

What's next

MHS traveled Tuesday to Lyons to take on the Lyons Lions in another Mid-Central Activities Association match-up.

Friday the Warriors will make up one of their many rainouts when they travel to Sterling to take on the Black Bears.

The game, which was originally scheduled for March 30, will begin at 4:30 p.m.
