Warriors win two duals

Sports reporter

The long winter break didn't seem to effect the Marion-Florence/Peabody-Burns wrestling team.

The varsity squad defeated Halstead and Hesston Thursday at the Hillsboro double dual.

The Warriors came out strong in the first match, defeating Halstead 46-26.

They improved to 2-0 on the night with a 42-25 victory against Hesston.

"We wrestled pretty well," MFPB head coach Chad Adkins said. "We are tough in our lower and middle weights, but we just have to get a few of our kids working the right [moves] at the right times and we will be really tough to beat."

After dropping the first match at 103 with an open, Randy Regnier started the Warrior scoring with a 58-second pin of Halstead's Terrin Bradford.

After Andy Shipman recorded a forfeit victory at 119, Marion ran off two victories in a row.

Cody Wildin recorded a pin at the one minute, 21 second mark at 125 pounds, and Randy's older brother Adam picked up a 14-2 victory in the 130-pound class.

MFPB led 22-6 at that point, and coasted to the victory.

The next three wrestlers for Marion lost, but three opens at 140, 145, and 152-pounds for Halstead helped keep the Warriors ahead.

Leading 40-20 with three matches left, MFPB was open at 189, both schools were open at 215, and at 285 Derek Riggs pinned Lucas Sampaio in 1:22 for the victory.

The match against Hesston included just eight of the 14 weight classes due to both schools having openings.

MFPB won five of the eight matches, all by pinfall.

Randy Regnier notched his second victory with a pin of Tanner Strohl with just 49 seconds left in the third period.

By the time Adam Regnier (30 seconds), Dillon Wildin (40 seconds), and Tylor Neil (14 seconds) all earned pins in the first period, MFPB had built a 30-19 lead.

Hector Cardenas was the final wrestler for Marion due to opens at 189, 215, and 285.

The junior pinned Kevin Schultz in 1:13, and the Warriors eventually won by 17.

Freshman Shayla Rahe was the lone junior varsity wrestler on the night for MFPB.

She defeated Halstead's Blake Becker by points.

Adkins was glad to see the athletes ready after an 18-day layoff.

"We have made great strides since the beginning of the year," he said.

The Warriors will be back in action Friday and Saturday at the Halstead invitational.
