LETTERS:   We can take care of ourselves years ago

To the Editor:

How can you say: Do we care? Sure, we care about good roads, we care about education. We care about these things. But can we believe that if we pay more taxes we will have good roads, if we pay more taxes we will have good education? Maybe we're realizing that all these promises are hollow because we pay more taxes and don't get better roads, we pay more taxes and don't get better education. Same way with economic development. We pay more. So we're realizing that we're being had!

The MAC project. Do we actually believe this grant is free money, that it is costing nobody nothing?

We as people have become disillusioned with government. Representative Don Dahl comes to town and only 20 people show up. Is it unreasonable to consider the fact that government has become our worst enemy? It demands and demands, and we pay and we pay, and what are the benefits?

We're realizing that paying more taxes just builds more bureaucracy and doesn't benefit us. So what is our recourse? Do we care about roads? Yes. But we're realizing government isn't the solution. It's the problem. We're being used and our welfare is at stake. It's draining our resources to sustain itself.

Is a new jail going to stop crime? It seems that the more government gets involved, the worse things get. Why are our jails full to overflowing?

When special interests demand more from government, it is the responsibility of the politicians to remind them that government can do nothing without first taking it from the people and paying themselves first.

It seems we, the people, expect the government to do certain things for us and become dependent on it, then complain about taxes and regulations, etc.

No matter how much we put into education, our communities continue to lose population. Why is that? Is more money for education going to benefit our communities or is it going to drive more young people away?

What does it mean to be free? Does it mean to do whatever I want and then make government be responsible for the consequences? It seems to me we have been too eager to transfer our responsibilities to the government. It is our right to provide for ourselves.

Government is what it is because we have said, "Give us a king! Give us someone to rule over us!" So we have a king and we hate it. Why?

Why don't government entities want to open up to the public in many matters? Because that would expose them. Why do our government officials push for agritourism and economic development? Is it not for the purpose of expanding the tax base, to build more government at our expense?

Is it the right of our governor to proclaim that all the children of Kansas are hers? By whose means is she going to provide for them and their well-being? Is it not her responsibility to teach us of our own responsibility? Is she and our government saying that we are not capable of providing for and taking care of ourselves? Then why are we expected to be capable of earning money and paying taxes?

Enough is enough! We want to take care of ourselves. We want to be responsible for our lives!!
