We're not the bad guys

How did we become the "bad guys?" This question plagues us, especially on days when it seems we can do nothing right.

Most communities know the value of a hometown newspaper. They may not always agree with an editorial stance but appreciate the coverage of community events. A newspaper chronicles the history of the town, good and bad. It also champions the causes that make the community better.

Here, it seems, the public tolerates the Marion County Record and its staff like ants at a picnic. We're expected to cover events at a moment's notice. Then we're publicly lambasted at every opportunity.

In the past year or so, we've gone through a transitional phase with staff changes and new management. We're optimistic about the future and the direction the newspaper is headed.

However, it is discouraging to realize we're fighting an uphill battle to build a public image and earn the respect a community newspaper deserves.

We'll admit it's hard to let go of old grudges and bad memories. But maybe it's time to put those feelings aside and give us another look.

We've been the "bad guy" for so long, it's difficult to change the perception of a whole community. We'll keep trying, even if we have to do it one reader at a time.
