We will miss him

To the Editor:

Like everyone who knew him, I was saddened to learn of Bill Meyer's death.

Bill introduced me to the real world of journalism when I interned in Mario in 1979. The experience was so rewarding. Bill called me upon my graduation and I signed on as a full-time staffer the following year.

From the start, Bill was clear on two rules: First, spell all names correctly. Second, all journalism is local.

The first rule I mastered with discipline. The second took me awhile. But it is a lesson I have carried with me every day of my working life.

Bill was passionate about Marion County. He knew many things about the world, the nation, the state, but nothing interested him more than the resurface work on U.S.-50 or the goat running loose on Elm Street.

As much as I will miss him, Marion County will miss him most.

It is a privilege to belong to that fraternity of those he tutored. We all are richer for having known him.
