Weather was just right for Tampa Hog Roast

The main street of Tampa came alive Saturday evening as people gathered from far and near to enjoy the annual hog roast sponsored by Tampa State Bank. The sounds of voices and music mingled with the taste and smell of good food to create a festive atmosphere.

Perfect weather added to the enjoyment of the evening. It was not too warm and not too cool, but just right.

A total of five hogs were roasted for the occasion. The meal of pork sandwiches, baked beans, pickles, and chips was prepared and served by local Lutheran and Catholic women.

According to Monica Svoboda, who was food chairman, 720 burgers were served along with 32 large bags of potato chips and 24 gallons of beans.

Bank president Chris Costello and his sister Mickey Lundy, executive vice president, presented gold pieces to several people. Two were rewarded for coming the farthest distance, one from St. Francis and one from Tulsa, Okla. Tillie Hein, 95, of Tampa was rewarded for being the oldest person in attendance.

When the Clearview Band began to play, children danced in the streets and were joined by others as the evening progressed.

The band featured two steel guitar players and a drummer who played and sang old-time rock-and-roll and country songs. They are from Herington and Council Grove and will be playing at Florence's Labor Day celebration.

Once again, the yearly event proved to be a big success.

"We couldn't have asked for a more perfect evening," Lundy said. "Everyone had a great time."
