Weems to retire from elderly department

Staff reporter

Marion County Department for Elderly Director Noreen Weems will retire, effective May 1.

Weems informed Marion County Commission of her decision during Monday's meeting.

Weems has been the director for nearly 27 years.

In other business:

— Commissioner Dan Holub asked road and bridge superintendent Jim Herzet if there would be any benefit in the county doing Third Street/Sunflower Road at the same time the City of Marion was doing its street projects. Herzet said he could compile specifications for the project, put it out for bids, and "see what happens."

Commission chairman Randy Dallke suggested a meeting between the county and city to discuss the project.

"That road needs a good base," Dallke said. He added that he would contact city administrator David Mayfield to discuss the issue.

— The commission approved an occasional use exemption for solid waste charges for the Tampa American Legion.

Joe Nowak and Bill Novak told the commission that the Legion only met about nine times per year and the facility does not generate trash. There is no Dumpster on the site.

Currently all businesses, including the Legion, are charged $132 per year by the county for solid waste disposal.

The exemption will charge two-thirds of the total cost. The organization can appeal last year's charges as well.

— Cardie Oil Company of Tampa had the low bid of $14,988 for 8,000 gallons of fuel. The bid was an average of $1.91 per gallon for 6,000 gallons of diesel fuel and $1.65 per gallon for 2,000 gallons of unleaded.

Cooperative Grain and Supply of Hillsboro also presented a bid of $15,134 for the same quantities.

— Kansas Door Inc. of Great Bend had the low bid of $5,036 for three overhead doors. One would be replaced at the main shop and two at the south shop.

Eldon's Door Company of Newton presented a bid of $5,587 and Cheney Door Company of Hutchinson had a bid of $6,344.

— Meredith Butler was introduced as the new Community Corrections Director. She requested and the commission approved the county's share of paying $6,346 for K-CAMP (Kansas County Association Multi-Line Pool) liability insurance for corrections personnel who serve Marion County.

It was a budgeted expense.

— An inter-local agreement was approved between the county and the juvenile detention facility in Junction City.

The county is charged on a monthly basis when county youth is detained at the facility.

In 2006, the county spent $15,000 which is a reduction from $50,000 in the 1990s.

The next commission meeting is at 9 a.m. Jan. 31 in the courthouse.
