What it s all about

After all the flap about casinos and such, it's good to know progressive thinkers have not been deterred. Members of Marion-Florence USD 408 board of education are fine examples of progressive thinkers.

They realize the school district could benefit from an additional gymnasium. But they didn't stop there. They took it a step farther and saw the value of an indoor swimming pool for the district. Again, they didn't stop there. They recognized that a new auditorium is a logical addition for a district that has such a long tradition in drama and music, such as ours.

It appears board members have done their homework. They have facts and figures. Public meetings will be held to answer the hard questions patrons undoubtedly will throw their way.

Those who remember the previous bond election, when we voted to build the new middle school, know that school improvement issues can be emotional and volatile. Everyone has an opinion. We want to see the facilities built in our (Marion or Florence) community. We want them to be the finest facilities money can buy — but at no additional cost to us, the taxpayer.

Progress does not happen without compromise. In a perfect world, every voter would be in accordance that this is the best course of action for the district and the best use of taxpayer money.

Since it's not a perfect world, the best we can hope for is that common sense will prevail and voters will study the facts and figures and reach the conclusion that our school district needs these improvements.

What's more — our kids need these improvements. And really, isn't that what this is all about?
