What s in a name?

Recently I wrote a column pointing out some of the mistakes I made while writing sports stories in the Marion County Record.

As is the case with every other column, my name, accompanied with a bad picture, was attached.

Monday a letter was sent to the paper pointing out an error made in a recent news headline.

The ransom-looking note contained the headline cut out and the incorrectly used word circled in red ink; it also was written in pencil and its condescending tone noted the correct word that should have been used.

The kicker: it wasn't signed.

In other words someone pointed out another's mistake, and then apparently forgot his or her name. Either that, or the pencil broke and he or she didn't feel like looking for another.

The letter also included definitions from the dictionary, similar to an e-mail sent to myself a little more than a year ago suggesting I check out a book called the dictionary. That person must have forgotten his or her name as well.

Like any other establishment we are going to make mistakes. And unlike others we are willing to listen to them, and even print them as a "Letter to the editor" if a name is attached.

We do have a section for letters without names for anyone who has never made a mistake. So far it's remained empty.

As we try hard not to, but inevitably will, make mistakes, we welcome suggestions and corrections.

However we aren't fond of letters from someone who is, wait let me check the dictionary. Oh yes here it is: a coward!
