Where do we go from here?

An editor would have to be a mind reader to know ahead of time which way the vote will go on a major issue, such as the school bond.

By now, the votes have been cast, counted, and the decision made. Voters have spoken and Marion-Florence USD 408 will proceed with a new gymnasium, fine arts center, and swimming pool.

Voters should be commended for their open-minded and progressive attitudes. Students in the school district will be reaping the benefits of those attitudes and within the next couple of years will be using brand new facilities.

As construction progresses, we'll be able to take pride in the fact that we believe in the future of our children enough to invest in their future — not only on an academic level but also in athletics and activities outside the classroom.

And, as the facilities near completion, we'll be reaping the benefits of additional activities such as regional and substate athletic tournaments, forensics tournaments, and community events. It's important that these things will bring people and money to town. It's more important that these events will establish Marion as a premiere location in Kansas for sporting events. That means exposure for Marion and Marion County and exposure means growth and progress for all.

This vote wasn't only about bricks and mortar. It was about trust in our school administration, confidence in our students, and hope for the future.

In return, some may stay or return to Marion in the future to raise their families, become involved in the community, and provide opportunities for future generations.

Our students today are true performers who will surpass expectations in the future because we've cared enough to give them facilities that will enhance their abilities.

Those "yes" votes mean more than new buildings. They mean a brand new outlook for the whole community.

In a brief word to the new city councilmen — you have your work cut out for you. Do the job you were elected to do. Listen to your constituents. Vote with them in mind. Don't let the job go to your heads. Last but not least, fulfill your campaign promises. Lead the community. That's what you were elected to do.
