Wildcat boys win early

Marion Middle School Wildcats enjoyed some success in the first week of the basketball season.

Marion took on Reno Valley Thursday, going 1-2.

The seventh grade team fought hard but lost 31-29 when a last second shot wouldn't fall. Eric Vogel scored 13 points to lead the Wildcats and Isaac Hett chipped in 11.

The eighth grade team responded with a 26-18 victory on Reno Valley's home court. Luke Gordon led all scorers with nine points and Mitchell Leppke had eight.

The mixed team fell short, losing 19-17. Four shots in the closing seconds failed to go in for Marion. Wil Case led Marion with eight points.

Monday the team traveled to Centre for their second straight road game. The Wildcats dominated the seventh grade game from start to finish. They jumped ahead 19-0 early and finished off Centre 51-15.

Vogel led Marion again with 12 points and Hett had 11. Adam Maag contributed eight in the victory.

The eighth graders used a huge second half to finish off Centre 45-25. Gordon exploded for 22 points and Elliot Hett had eight.

Currently the seventh graders stand at 1-1, the eighth graders 2-0, and the mixed team 0-1.

Marion plays Monday at home against Halstead.
