Wildcat eighth graders sweep opponents

Marion Middle School eighth grade boys' basketball team defeated Hillsboro and Hesston this past week.

The Wildcats knocked off Hesston Jan. 23, 38-33.

Eric Vogel led MMS with 15 points and Adam Maag added seven points.

MMS led 26-17 at the break, but the Swathers came back to tie the game in the third quarter. Head coach Kelly Robson said Wil Case came off the bench to provide a spark and help the Wildcats to victory.

The seventh grade team fell behind 11-2 after the first quarter and never caught up, falling to Hesston, 45-18.

Jordan Versch had five points for MMS and Landon Leiker four points.

Hesston finished the night winning two-of-three games against Marion, knocking off the mixed team, 44-18.

Les Riggs had six points and Brady Hudson five points.

MMS traveled Thursday to Hillsboro for a match-up with the rival Trojans.

Despite an illness limiting the Wildcats to just seven players, MMS easily defeated Hillsboro, 37-25.

Vogel was high-scorer again with 19 points, and Maag was next with five points.

Robson said it was the best passing game of the season for MMS.

The seventh grade team led 7-4 after one quarter, but was outscored 16-1 in the second and trailed 20-8 at halftime. Hillsboro kept up the pressure and won the game, 36-23.

Versch led the team with eight points, and Dillon Richmond chipped in with seven points.

MMS mixed team was tied 16-16 at the end of regulation with the Trojans, but outscored Hillsboro 6-0 in overtime to claim a 22-16 victory.

Ryan Jones led the team with six points.
