Williams to tour with K-State symphony band

Stacia Williams of Florence will participate this spring with the Kansas State University Symphony Band in a week-long tour of the South Pacific.

The band will perform sets from May 18-27 of mostly American music by John Philip Sousa when the group goes on its first overseas tour, performing in Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji.

Students of varied majors participate in the 65-member band, which is like a symphony orchestra without stringed instruments. The band is directed by Frank Tacz, professor of music and director of bands at K-State.

A send-off concert will be performed at 7:30 p.m. May 15 at the Larry Norvell Band Shell in Manhattan's City Park. The performance is free and open to the public.

The band also will make a national performance prior to the spring tour, performing April 21 at the Music Educators National Conference at Salt Lake City, Utah. K-State was one of three schools selected to perform. The band also will perform at Boulder, Colo.

To help students earn their half of the trip's costs, they organized fund-raisers that included a battle of the bands and accepted donations at concerts. Donations continue to be accepted at the band office in 109 McCain Auditorium on the K-State campus.

Williams is a 2002 graduate of Marion High School and the daughter of Roger and Laura Williams, Florence.
