Wind surfer causes excitement at reservoir

What started out being a possible capsized boat and people in the water at Marion Reservoir turned out to be a wind surfer having equipment problems.

The ordeal began at 3 p.m. Sunday when the call came in which made law enforcement and emergency medical personnel spring into action.

Kansas Wildlife and Parks Resource Officer Marvin Peterson, three Marion County Sheriff's Deputies, two Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers, Marion EMS personnel, and Marion rescue volunteers responded.

According to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials, the surfer was wearing a dry suit which protected him from the cold water. The surfer was brought into shore by officials even though he was in no physical danger.

Strong winds were reported Friday but by Sunday the wind was less severe, said Park Ranger Neil Whitaker.

"In the end, it turned out to be a non-event," Whitaker said, which is the kind of ending officials like to see.
