Wins mark good beginning for MMS girls

The new basketball season started out on the right track for the Marion Middle School girls' basketball teams, which picked up victories Monday against the host Centre Cougars.

Marion's A-team came out relaxed and ready to play as they spurted to a 7-1 first quarter advantage, but Wildcat offensive struggles allowed Centre to close the gap to 10-8 at halftime.

Tough defense limited Centre to just two baskets in the second half, and Marion's ability to run the floor led to a 19-12 victory.

Kayla Williams led Marion in scoring with 8 points, and Jordan Harper added 4 more.

Whitney Gordon poured in 20 points to lead the Marion B-team to a 34-16 victory in the second game, with Raelene Allen contributing 6.

"This was a nice win since this was the first middle school basketball game for many of them," said Autumn Priddy, MMS head coach.

Priddy was pleased with the team's strong start, as well as how they ran the floor to collect some easy baskets.

Marion will host Ellinwood Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Marion Gymnasium.
