Approximately 100 people attended the 10th Marion County Women's Wellness Workshop Saturday at Marion Elementary School.

The surprise keynote speaker was a figure from the past, Calamity Jane. She was impersonated by an Emporia State University professor, complete with a cowboy outfit and saddle.

While telling the story of her life, she gave a glimpse into what life was like for some during the settling of the west.

Katrina Hancock, a Marion native, shared her experiences as a sportscaster in Toledo, Ohio. (See sidebar.)

Workshop participants were given a choice of three of seven small sessions to attend. They included: Yoga for Everyday by massage therapist Carolan McFarland; Leadership for a New Woman by Johanna Brazil, a presenter for Kansas Leadership Initiative; Essential Oils, The Missing Link by MHS instructor Mary Griffith;

The Bully on the Block by Sandra Berg, licensed professional counselor for Prairie View, Inc.; Put Some Lemonade in Your Life by Mary Lou Odle; Deck the Halls at Your House by Mary Ann Conyers; Telling God's Story and Making it Our Own by Rev. Phyllis Kumorowski, professional Biblical storyteller.

The group enjoyed a lunch prepared by Panhandler Catering of Hillsboro, and were treated to a variety of delectable desserts.

During a closing session, Mary Ann Wiens, Linda Ogden, and Erna Mae Yeagley were recognized for having attended all 10 women's workshops.

Coordinators were: Sandra Berg, Prairie View; Janet Bryant, Marion County Food Bank; Janet Herzet, Marion County Home Care and St. Luke Hospital; Linda Ogden, Communities in Schools of Marion County; Nancy Pihl, K-State Research and Extension Marion County; and Marsha Setzkorn-Meyer, Hillsboro Community Medical Center.

The workshop was made possible through donations of money and door prizes from area businesses, organizations, agencies, and individuals.

A children's workshop held in conjunction with the women's workshop was attended by at least 19 children. It was organized by Misti Richmond and Katie Zogelman, members of National Honor Society at Marion High School. They were assisted by members of Marion-Florence FFA.
