Wrestlers compete at Halstead

Five Marion Warrior wrestlers competed Friday and Saturday in the Halstead Invitational.

While it wasn't the most success they've had this year, the Warriors left feeling positive.

Junior Casey Nelson and senior Chris Freeby were the highest finishers for Marion, taking fifth place.

Both wrestlers finished 3-2, and according to coach Chad Adkins overcame early mistakes to finish strong.

After reaching the semifinals Saturday morning, Nelson lost his first match, but went on to win the next two.

Freeby did the same, losing on Saturday to last year's 160-pound state champion.

Senior Chelsea Arnhold only wrestled two matches, splitting them, because of an illness.

Senior Drew Looper, wrestling for only the second time this year, finished 1-2 on the weekend.

Looper recovered from an injury suffered during the football season over break, and is just now getting back in his normal routine.

Adkins said he has seen a lot of improvement over the past few weeks from Looper.

Freshman Justin Jacobson lost both of his matches, but Adkins said it was the first time this year he has seen top-quality competition.

Adkins looks for Jacobson, who was 2-0 heading into the tournament, to improve in the future.

The Warriors will tangle with Lincoln and Lyons in the Lincoln double dual at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, and battle Saturday in the Eureka Invitational.
