Wrestlers start week off slow, finish strong

Marion-Florence Peabody-Burns wrestling team struggled Thursday at the Lyons double dual.
They defeated the Haven Wildcats 54-24, and fell to the Lyons Lions, 48-24.
Against Lyons the Warriors failed to win a match that was not a forfeit, and went just 5-3 in matches wrestled against Haven.
"We didn't wrestle well," head coach Chad Adkins said.
Adkins was pleased with his team's performance Saturday at the Remington invitational.
As a team the Warriors finished fifth out of 10, and placed seven wrestlers in the top four.
Casey Nelson and John Barr III led the way for Marion with second-place finishes.
Barr III improved his record to 17-15 and Nelson improved his to team-best, 23-9.
Hank Collett and Gavin Moore each finished the day in third place, while Tyler Slater, Adam Regnier, and Charlie Holub all took fourth place in their respective weight classes.
"It was the best tournament of the year for us," Adkins said. "I think we are peaking at the right time."
It would be a good idea for the team to continue peaking when it travels Friday and Saturday to Eureka for the regional tournament.
While the regular season determines what seed a wrestler has at regionals, the only way to qualify for the state tournament is to place in the top four at regionals.
"We need to continue this on to this weekend," Adkins said.
Depler injured
Warrior wrestler Adam Depler, who finished sixth at state last season, is likely out for the rest of the year with a knee injury.
Depler hurt his knee in a 189-pound match against Lyons' Davis Verrette.
He was 19-9 on the season.
