Your Turn

Will cronyism and good ol' boy foolishness tear our town apart? It will if it keeps happening. Grow up, you guys!

***

Marion City Administrator David Mayfield is rude. Our tax dollars should not be paid to someone like that.

***

Marion needs mature, dignified, courteous people attending city council meetings — not shouting, laughing, winking children. Keep on like that and Marion will be desolate. Remember, we voted 2-to-1 for Olson.

***

Thank you, Marion County Record and Free Press for reporting the childish behavior of those hecklers at the Marion City Council meeting. I just wish you would have reported their names — perhaps then they would grow up and shut up.

***

Shame on the disrespectful bullies who acted like a bunch of spoiled, self-serving brats. The taxpayers have spoken loud and clear. A change was needed. At least treat our mayor with respect and dignity. She deserves it.

***

It sure sounds like Dave Crofoot is threatening or bullying Mayor Mary Olson just because he has money. How sad. Power magnifies character!

***

Way to go, Mary Olson. Don't bend to the bullies who are threatening you.

***

Quote: "There is a small group who represent a lot of dollars . . . I hope you know what that means." Dave Crofoot — what does that mean?

***

The Marion County Commission promoted Teresa Huffman from Marion County Economic Development Secretary to the position of director with a $4,000 a year raise. Next, I suppose they will hire a secretary for her.

When the Hillsboro fourth grade classes toured the courthouse, jail, and ambulance department April 27, where was ambulance director Larry Larsen, and where was the ambulance they were supposed to tour?

Why is it all the disruption in this town is being blamed on our new mayor? She was elected by a big margin — by those who worry about how things are being run — to do just what she is doing. Maybe the country club crowd doesn't realize there are people living here who have just as big an interest in the community as they do, but don't have the clout or the money to try to blackmail the mayor with threats.

I agree that Your Turn should not be used by those who comment on lies or rumors. But, the people of Marion voted in a new mayor and council to make a change. A few council members who promised this change have turned their backs on the people who voted for them.

It's funny how the power of money and certain cliques have turned these two councilmen on the majority of those who voted them into office.

The mayor defeated the old mayor by almost 4-to-1 votes because she has promised to make changes and she listens to the people of Marion.

Mayor, don't let this group of people get to you, too. These people, the "money" people, should hire the city administrator themselves and let him be in charge of their businesses.

I think the city can go on without him.

Should Marion change its name to Salem? Or is the witch hunt over?

***

I want to say thank you to Bill Holdeman for having the guts to vote to not reappoint David Mayfield.

To David Crofoot — I guess you are right — money talks and the voters of Marion don't matter one bit.

To Mayfield — I hope you know you got lucky enough to get reappointed. I hope you take this second chance and do a better job the second time than you did the first time. Just remember, you are very lucky that we voters don't get to vote you into your job.

After living in Marion for years I thought I had seen it all. Now we see four members of the city council caving into the intimidation and threats of a small group that threatens to disrupt our local economy if they didn't get the man they want as city administrator, even if one of the group is a Hillsboro resident. Shame on you Gene. Shame on you Stacey. Shame on you Jerry. Shame on you Mary.

***

The Hillsboro City Council had a city administrator who couldn't get along with constituents and the council, but the council was able to make a clean break with him while the Marion City Council tried the same thing and couldn't get it done. What makes it even more interesting is that the same city attorney who advised the Hillsboro council, advised the Marion council.

***

We've suspected all along that Marion is run by a few people with money. After Monday night, the writing is on the wall and it's out in the open. Marion IS run by a few people with money.

Why would any city employee want to stay in a hostile environment? Even though it was of his own creation, you would think he would want to move on and find solace in some other unsuspecting community. Do you think this is over? Think again.
