Centre student, 3 others die in crash
Eight-year-old Centre Elementary student Nathaniel Haney was killed along with his mother, great-grandmother, and one other in a head-on collision at 2:55 p.m. Saturday on K-4, four miles west of K-15 in Dickinson County.
Nathaniel’s 6-year-old brother, Mathew, also a student at Centre, was injured in the wreck. He was treated at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita and released Sunday to his grandparents in Herington.
The children’s mother, Dawn R. Peel, 30, Herington, had been driving east on K-4 when her 2013 Hyundai Elantra crossed the centerline and struck a westbound 2025 Chevrolet Traverse driven by Adam G. Henely, 23, Salina, according to Kansas Highway Patrol.
Henely and passenger Aidan G. Henely, 20, Herington, suffered only minor injuries, but passenger Denise R. Henely, 57, Herington, was killed, and passenger Archer G. Henely, 14, Herington, suffered serious injury and was taken to Wesley.
Nathaniel’s great-grandmother, Peggy A. Sutton, 71, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, a passenger in the Hyundai, also died in the crash.
The two Haney children had transferred from Herington to Centre at the start of the just-concluded academic year.
Mathew is a kindergartner. Nathaniel had just completed third grade.
All victims were wearing seatbelts or other restraints, the highway patrol reported.
