County approves motorcycle race

Staff writer

County commissioners last week approved an application to use county property for this year’s Florence Grand Prix motorcycle race.

The race May 24 and 25 is limited to 600 riders. Cost for racers is $100 a person and $200 a team. The 100-mile race course winds through Florence.

Spectators pay $10.

It was named after an event that ended 54 years ago and was rejuvenated in 2022 in honor of Florence’s 100th birthday.

The Grand Prix has eight categories for vintage motorcycles and 10 categories for modern motorcycles.

In other business last week, commissioners approved paying $1,500 to Elcon Properties for storage at the former Lumberyard and $305.63 to Western Associates for a tablecloth for the county emergency management department. Because they are associated with the businesses, commissioner Jonah Gehring does not vote on Elcon purchases, and commissioner Dave Crofoot does not vote on Western Associates purchases.

They also accepted a bid from Baker Brothers for office paper for $47.50 a case instead of Office Plus’s bid of $40.45 a case, and voted to purchase a John Deere mower from Prairieland Partners for $7,700.

Commissioners met in executive session with Wichita lawyer Forrest Rhodes from Foulston Siefkin for 20 minutes to discuss potential litigation.
