Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

MARCH 21

6:30 a.m. — A 69-year-old woman speaking unintelligibly after falling at a residence in the 300 block of S. Birch St. in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance also was dispatched but was called off. Hillsboro ambulance noted that the house number was misreported in initial dispatches.

9:51 a.m. — A 70-year-old man bitten by a raccoon the night before at Marion Reservoir was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance from the 200 block of S. Date St. in Hillsboro. Ambulance attendants requested that law enforcement be alerted.

11:33 a.m. — A male HCH patient identified only as having alerted mental status was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to the county at 1:40 p.m.

12:48 p.m. — A 72-year-old man was found dead in a house just west of Hillsboro on US-56. Marion ambulance, Hillsboro first responders, the county’s ambulance director, and a coroner were called.

2:44 p.m. — An 84-year-old woman who thought she might be having a stroke in the independent living area of Bethesda Home at Goessel was checked by a Goessel first responder and taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:45 p.m. — Immediately upon returning to the county, Hillsboro ambulance headed to HCH to transfer another patient to Wesley. The ambulance was back in Hillsboro at 7:33 p.m.

5:55 p.m. — An Eagle Med helicopter transferred an HCH patient to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

7:19 p.m. — As soon as Hillsboro ambulance returned to the county, Marion ambulance headed to HCH to transfer yet another patient, this one to McPherson Center for Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 9:25 p.m.

MARCH 22

5:25 a.m. — Hillsboro, Goessel, Durham, and Lehigh firefighters spent an hour extinguishing a garage fire on Vernon St. a block south of Main St. in Lehigh. The address initially was misreported as being several blocks away. Hillsboro ambulance also was dispatched as a precaution. Lehigh firefighters remained at the scene until 8:03 a.m.

1:33 p.m. — What began as a controlled burn near 270th and US-56/77 grew out of control and was battled for more than four hours by firefighters from 11 departments. At least two people were treated by ambulance attendants on the scene. Neither was taken to a hospital.

Lincolnville firefighters initially were called, but none were available for more than an hour. Marion firefighters were summoned instead. They soon requested assistance from Lost Springs and Ramona firefighters.

About 50 minutes into the fire, with Marion’s assistant chief radioing that the fire was getting out of hand, Goessel’s fire chief volunteered to activate a task force of Durham, Goessel, Hillsboro, and Lehigh firefighters to assist.

Lincolnville firefighters also responded shortly thereafter. Marion ambulance was called as a precaution. County road and bridge workers brought tankers of water and fuel. Sheriff’s deputies also responded. Firefighters from Hope, Herington, and Woodbine were summoned as well, though other firefighters had difficulty finding a radio talkgroup that would allow them to communicate. Woodbine firefighters were canceled although Hope and Herington firefighters helped fight the fire.

The fire was contained after two hours. Firefighters remained on the scene until 5:45 p.m.

2:21 p.m. — Peabody firefighters assisted Walton firefighters in battling a grass fire for 40 minutes at US-50 and Oliver Rd. They initially were unable to determine which interoperability talkgroup would allow them to communicate by radio with Walton firefighters.

4:24 p.m. — With Marion ambulance still at the grass fire near Lincolnville, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to Marion Assisted Living where an 86-year-old man fell, may have hit his head, and was experiencing an altered level of consciousness. He was taken to St. Luke.

9:44 p.m. — A 40-year-old man with a bleeding head wound in the 300 block of N. Main St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

THURSDAY

1:40 a.m. — Trees burning at Peabody Lakeside Country Club were brought under control within two hours by Peabody firefighters.

1:52 a.m. — A 21-year-old woman with a headache was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:19 a.m.

5:58 a.m. — A 59-year-old woman with a fever and rapid heartbeat at a farmhouse near 210th and Falcon Rds. was taken to Wesley Woodlawn by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:27 a.m.

1:29 p.m. — A grass fire at 340th and Jade Rds. was extinguished in a little more than an hour by Tampa and Durham firefighters

FRIDAY

12:05 a.m. — An 89-year-old woman who fell and hit her head at Bethesda Home in Goessel was transferred to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer.

1:10 a.m. — A 72-year-old woman, vomiting and feeling faint at a house in the 400 block of Elm St. in Marion, was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

6:05 a.m. — A 70-year-old man with unspecified medical issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:21 a.m.

9:14 a.m. — An 82-year-old woman who fell and hit her head in a parking lot at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:52 a.m. — An out-of-control grass fire, started by landowners near 220th and Sunrise Rds. but not reported as a controlled burn, was extinguished within an hour by Marion firefighters.

2:16 p.m. — Marion firefighters were sent back to west of 220th and Sunrise Rds., where the previous grass fire rekindled. The rekindled fire was extinguished within 45 minutes.

6:54 p.m. — A 75-year-old woman who fell in the 1400 block of Denver St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

11:11 p.m. — An unconscious 40-year-old woman, either snoring or having trouble breathing in the 600 block of S. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro, declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance also responded but was called off.

SATURDAY

10:49 a.m. — A 60-year-old man injured when a lift fell on him at Mennonite Heritage and Agricultural Museum in Goessel was taken on an emergency basis to Wesley by Hillsboro ambulance. A first responder from Goessel provided initial care. The ambulance returned to the county at 1:38 p.m.

12:44 p.m. — Marion firefighters supervised a controlled burn near US-77 and 140th Rd.

3:41 p.m. — Peabody firefighters supervised a controlled burn at 40th and Mustang Rds.

5:47 p.m. — Peabody firefighters supervised a controlled burn along Mustang Rd. between 50th and 60th Rds.

8:08 p.m. — Without being dispatched by radio, Hillsboro ambulance attendants announced that they were taking a patient from an unspecified location to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 10:21 p.m.

SUNDAY

3:20 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance responded to accidental activation of a medical alarm by an 86-year-old man in the 200 block of S. Date St. in Hillsboro.

6:29 a.m. — A 71-year-old man who fell and hurt his legs at a residence on Remington Rd. between 210th and 230th Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

10:13 a.m. — A 67-year-old man, shaking and unable to walk at a home in the 300 block of S. Birch St. in Hillsboro, was taken to by Hillsboro ambulance to Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital, Wichita. Hillsboro firefighters helped lift the patient. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 1:23 p.m.

5:44 p.m. — A 75-year-old man with an undisclosed medical condition was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Salem Home to HCH.

MONDAY

9:41 a.m. — Hillsboro firefighters monitored a controlled burn for two hours in the 1000 block of S. Wilson St.

1:32 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters monitored a controlled burn on city property near US-56 and Kanza Rd. for 2½ hours.

4:16 p.m. — A controlled burn that grew out of control at 210th and Kanza Rds. was extinguished within 15 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters, who remained on the scene for another 45 minutes.

10:56 p.m. — An 81-year-old man feeling sick in the 600 block of N. Locust St. in Peabody was taken to St. Luke by Peabody ambulance.
