Marion wins at buzzer; Trojans, Bluebirds also victorious

Marion

Kiersten Wildin hits a three-point buzzer beater Thursday night to give the Warriors a 28-27 victory at home over Council Grove.

“Kiersten stepped up and hit the game winner for us,” coach Jason Hett said. “We were 0 for 10 behind the arc before that shot, so I was proud of her and had all the confidence in her to knock it down.”

Kate Wessel led the team in scoring with 12 points. She also had six rebounds. Hailey Harshman scored six with five rebounds. Dylan Kraus scored five with seven rebounds.

“Thursday was a struggle for almost 32 minutes,” Hett said.“We could not get anything going and we were lacking some energy throughout. When you are in these types of games, we had to try to find different areas to manufacture points and some momentum.”

The Warrior girls had seven victories and only two losses in February. Marion will be on the road Friday against Moundridge.

“We still have a lot of things to work on, but this is a fun group to work with all season,” Hett said.

Hillsboro

The Trojans played back-to-back games Friday and Saturday because of weather delays and won both.

Friday night, Hillsboro traveled to Minneapolis and won 47-32.

“It was a really good team effort where we shot the ball really well early and played good team basketball all on both ends of the floor,” coach Micah Ratzlaff said.

Ella Potlucek scored 32 of the 47 points for Hillsboro, 18 of them from beyond the arc.

On Saturday, concluding the postponed Hillsboro Classic, Hillsboro sneaked out a 39-38 victory over Riley County.

“We were fortunate to end the game with the ball, and Talia Jost came up huge with the winning offensive rebound and lay up to win the game against a really good Riley County team,” Ratzlaff said.

The Trojans will be at home Friday against Halstead.

Goessel

Sedgwick started the game with quick baskets to take an early lead, but four baskets by the Bluebirds (all three-pointers) gave the home team the lead, which they relinquished.

Three=point baskets by Mackenzie Voth and Jayley Schmidt to begin the third quarter, gave the Bluebirds a 10-point lead. The Cardinals got as close as 29-27, but when Sedgwick tried to trap the Bluebirds with a full-court press, Abi Johnson got free down court and sparked a rally that forced the Cardinals to foul. Goessel made 11 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal a 44-34 homecoming victory.

Voth led the Bluebirds with 15 points. Delaney Duerksen added 11.

Goessel (9-5) will continue Wheat State League play Friday against Wakefield (2-9).

Centre

The Cougars lost 45-10 Friday at home against Canton-Galva. The Cougars will play next on the road against Little River.

Peabody-Burns

No weekend games were scheduled for Peabody-Burns. The Warriors will be back in action this Friday at home against Canton-Galva.
