A high-speed chase Tuesday morning through Marion, McPherson, and Saline counties ended in the suicide of the driver.
Anthony Marshall, 47, was a suspect in a robbery Monday of Equity Bank in Topeka, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Topeka Police Department, and Kansas Highway Patrol.
A Topeka police spokesmen said Marshall also was a suspect in a homicide Monday in Topeka.
Kathleen Hayes, 40, who was known to Marshall, died of a gunshot wound. The homicide remains under investigation.
According to Marion County Undersheriff Larry Starkey, a “be on the lookout” advisory Tuesday alerted deputies shortly before they spotted a white Ford F-150 pickup headed south on K-15 near Durham.
Deputies gave chase.
“There wasn’t anyone else chasing when we saw him,” Starkey said.
The pickup continued south until Marshall turned west on US-56. Driving at speeds of 80 to 100 mph, the chase continued until Marshall turned north onto I-135 at McPherson.
Deputies were joined by state troopers, Hillsboro police, Lindsborg police, McPherson County deputies, Salina police, and Saline County deputies.
Marshall exited the interstate on the K-4 exit at Bridgeport in southern Saline County after both tires on the driver’s side were deflated by stop sticks. Marshall lost control of the vehicle, which entered a ditch.
According to Highway Patrol radio transmissions monitored during the chase, the driver earlier had been entering ditches in an apparent effort to avoid stop sticks unrolled across the highway.
Highway Patrol transmissions said when the driver stopped, he refused to get out of the pickup. Transmissions went silent after a McPherson County deputy said he had a dog that could help get the driver out.
Starkey said Marshall shot himself.
Marshall was taken by ambulance to Salina Regional Health Center, where he died from his injury.
