Marion’s recycling to change hands

Staff writer

Recycling in Marion likely will soon be done by a contractor instead of the city.

Recycling now costs city residents $8 a month for weekly pickup.

Under terms of an agreement city council members expect to sign with Hutchinson-based Nisly Brothers, recyclable goods will be picked up every other week for $15 a month and payment will be billed through Nisly.

Merill Yoder of Nisly Brothers talked Monday with council members.

Resident Margaret Wilson, an avid recycler, questioned Yoder about the service.

The company does single-stream recycling, meaning cardboard, glass bottles, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles all are placed into a single 95-gallon recycling container Nisly picks up at the curb.

Materials picked up are sold to companies that for the most part recycle them. As much as 15% may still end up in a landfill, he said.

“I’m going to have to reconfigure my garage,” Mayor Mike Powers said.

At their meeting Monday, council members also conducted a 10-minute executive session to discuss replacing the city code inspector.

James Masters, hired in 2022, took a job as city inspector at Council Grove. He was hired by Council Grove for $35 an hour, slightly less than the $37.80 he was paid at Marion.

Monday also was the first day for new City Administrator Bryan Wells. Interim administrator Mark McAnarney sat with him at the council table.

“Mark will come back from time to time to help out,” Powers said.

A work meeting will be Monday.

A study session to discuss the budget will be June 30.
