Peabody has banner day

Peabody’s community-made banners were erected last week and now are waving proudly on Main St.
The banners were orchestrated by Topeka-based artist Carol Bradbury last fall thanks to a $8,500 grant provided by Kansas Arts Commission.
Bradbury worked with students at Peabody-Burns as well as attendees of October’s Fall Festival to collect as many scribbles, doodles, drawings, and sketches as she could on a silk canvas.
She then scanned and digitally manipulated the artworks, creating 10 separate collages to display.
The back of each banner features a haiku written by a 5th through 8th grader regarding their dreams for the community.
“Once I had a dream / It was for light in the world / It bears hope for earth,” reads one student’s haiku.
“My favorite place / Peabody is my dream town / I get to live here,” reads another.
Addison Bush, Heidi Hittle, Susan Mayo, Roy Ortiz, Ashlee Salazar-Fritz, and Jason Warwick-Ortiz installed the banners. Linda Martinez provided iced tea.
