Podcasts focus on city workers

Staff writer

A new podcast by Hillsboro City Council member Ronald Wilkins is introducing the public to major department heads and what happens behind the scenes.

In his first podcast last week, Wilkins played the role of a police officer conducting a traffic stop.

After the make-believe stop, Wilkins spoke with a few officers, including chief Jessey Hiebert, about policing.

“This will shed some light on the departments,” Wilkins said.
“There’s just a lot that goes on behind the scenes.”

In the podcast Wilkins asks Hiebert about his background and why he chose law enforcement for a career.

“I plan to do all major departments in the city, and if that goes well I might broaden it to other workers,” he said.

He could cover local schools, too.

“I am starting small with just city departments,” he said. “What we have right now is great.”

Wilkins had heard questions from the public, and rather than tell them what was happening, he wanted to show them.

“It was not a spur of the moment idea,” he said, noting that he thought about it for more than a year.

“This is my first time getting into it. This is something new to me,” he said.

He thanked Callie Arnold, assistant to the city administrator, for her help in creating the podcasts

“Essentially, my plan is to do these as long as there is something to show to the community,” he said. “That is my goal.”
