Pursuit hits 120 mph

Staff writer

Marion County deputies Saturday joined in what turned out to be a four-county chase Saturday that began when Harvey County deputies tried to pull over an Arizona man who fled along US-50.

Jose Espinoza-Carbajal, 19, of Glendale, Arizona, refused to stop for Harvey County deputies performing a routine but unspecified traffic stop about 8 p.m.

A Marion County deputy joined the pursuit when the car entered the county and continued until the car passed Strong City.

Undersheriff Larry Starkey said Espinoza-Carbajal fled through the county at speeds of up to 120 mph, somehow managing to navigate the roundabout at Florence.

Chase County deputies tried stop sticks east of Elmdale and again west of Strong City, but Espinoza-Carbajal drove on the opposite shoulder to avoid them. He narrowly missed hitting deputies.

A Lyon County deputy ended the chase on I-35 east of Emporia by hitting the back corner of Espinoza-Carbajal’s car with the deputy’s squad car.

Espinoza-Carbajal was booked into Chase County jail on suspicion of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, fleeing a law enforcement officer, and avoiding a tire-deflating device.

Marion County Attorney Michelle Brown said she does not yet know whether she will file charges in the case.

A social media profile suggests that he is a concrete laborer for a Phoenix masonry company.
