Recyclers to pay at least $5

Staff writer

Bringing in anything from a single soft drink can up to 100 pounds of recyclable material now will cost residents $5 at the county’s transfer station.

Instead of charging 4 cents a pound, commissioners Monday voted unanimously to charge a flat fee of $5 for the first 100 pounds of recyclable material brought in.

Transfer station director Josh Housman told commissioners he had no way to measure weights under 20 pounds.

Commissioner David Crofoot suggested the county accept the first 100 pounds at no charge, but commission chairman Jonah Gehring said he thought everyone should pay to defray costs of sending recyclables to a recycling center.

Crofoot said people would simply put recyclable materials into the trash instead.
