Student reappointed to state panel

Staff writer

Marion High School student Shaliah Ensley has been reappointed to Kansas State High School Activities Association’s student advisory team.

The team, made up of juniors and seniors, provides a student perspective on school activities.

A recent topic has been preventing burnout from being involved in too many activities.

“They are a sounding board,” KSHSAA assistant director Jeremy Holaday said. “We’ve talked about rural perspective and needed changes.”

The team meets twice a year in Topeka and has virtual meetings throughout the year, Holaday said.

To be selected, students must submit an application saying why they want to be part of the team.

“They tell us what their involvement is in their school,” he said.

The number of the activities is not a factor in selection for the team, but the student’s school must endorse the applicant.

According to a statement by KSHSAA executive director Bill Faflick, more than 50% of high school athletes report training related injuries and 36% of student-athletes report feeling burned out because of pressure from their coaches and parents.

He reported that 70% of kids drop out of organized sports by age 13.
