Tractor-trailer overturns in roundabout

Staff writer

A tractor-trailer loaded with rock overturned Wednesday on a roundabout at the intersection of US-77 and KS-150 three miles east of Marion.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, Sheldone Scott Smith, 54, Salina, who was northbound in a 2009 Freightliner, was driving too fast into the roundabout.

The semi, loaded with rocks, rolled onto its passenger side.

Deputies, firefighters, Marion police, a state trooper, an ambulance, and the county emergency manager all rushed to the scene.

Smith, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered suspected serious injuries.

He was taken by ambulance to St. Luke Hospital before being airlifted to St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

Deputies and police blocked oncoming traffic while Smith was loaded into the ambulance and firefighters tended to fluid leaking under the cab of the truck.

After the ambulance left the scene, officers began directing traffic through the intersection.
