Republican candidates to represent the 70th District in the Kansas House of Representatives continued to make claims Monday about how the campaign has been funded and run.

In a letter to district newspapers, challenger Cheryl Green, Rosalia, disputed claims that her campaign was funded and run by special interest groups.

“I can tell you point-blank, I’ve been running my campaign,” Green said in an interview. “I’ve had very few volunteers.”

She and her husband have done most of the campaigning, she said, and the largest portion of her campaign funding came from an insurance payment for a barn that burned down at their farm.

She said she had received money from five political action committees, representing 12 percent of her campaign funds.

“The issue isn’t who is funding her campaign,” incumbent J. Robert Brookens said when asked to respond.

The issue, he said, is who is running the campaign. Brookens said voters should pay attention to the sources of campaign mailings they receive. He said he had received several mailings from powerful special interest groups that implicitly supported Green’s campaign.

Fliers opposing Brookens, received in Marion, state they are paid for by the Kansas Chamber PAC and Americans for Prosperity Kansas Chapter. Brookens said those mailings would not be reflected in Green’s campaign filings because they were paid for by a third party.

Brookens said he had received a substantial amount of campaign contributions from local businesses and political action committees, but none of the contributions came with strings attached.
