Centre girls win against Goessel

Playing for a large crowd Friday at Centre High School’s winter homecoming, the Lady Cougars basketball team defeated Goessel, 45-24.

After a layup by Shelby Makovec, Goessel’s Johanna Hoffman made a 3-pointer, giving Goessel a 3-2 lead. It was to be the Lady Bluebirds’ only lead of the game.

Beka Basore and Cacey Simons joined Makovec in adding 9 more points in the first quarter, and Centre led, 11-3.

Goessel bounced back to match Centre’s 10 points in the second quarter, but the Lady Cougars entered halftime with a 21-13 lead.

They outscored Goessel 15-5 in the third quarter and 9-6 in the fourth, to win by 21 points.

Makovec led scoring with 15 points, including two three-pointers. Basore scored 12 points. Other scorers were Simons, 8, Amy Makovec, 4, and Jasmin Ghany, Theo Kassebaum, and Makenzie Deines, 2 each.

The junior varsity defeated Goessel, 21-12, in two quarters of play. Ghany and Brenna Shields scored 8 points each. Kailyn Riffel and Callie Riffel each scored 2 points.

Solomon

The Lady Cougars got an easy victory Jan. 31 against Solomon, defeating the Lady Bombers, 60-28.

Playing at home, they led 13-6 after one quarter and continued to build their lead from there. The last three quarters saw scoring advantages of 16-4, 19-10, and 12-8, resulting in a 32-point victory.

Shelby Makovec had numerous layups and two 3-point baskets for 22 points. Basore made 13 points and Simons had 9. Other scorers were Deines, 6, and Ghany, Amy Makovec, Genesis Rudolph, Brenna Shields, and Theo Kassebaum, 2 each.
