Centre scholars advance to state

Centre High School was the site of a regional class 1A-D1 scholars’ bowl tournament on Thursday, and the host team was among the teams that advanced to state competition.

The CHS Cougars were 3-1 in pool play with victories over Goessel, 50-25, Flint Hills Rosalia, 70-10, and Waverly, 40-20. They lost to Wakefield, 50-40.

In the championship rounds, the Cougars posted a 4-1 record, avenging their earlier loss to Wakefield, 70-10, and defeating White City, 60-0, Randolph Blue Valley, 60-10, and Hartford, 60-30. Their only loss in the championship rounds was to Goessel, 50-10.

CHS placed second in the regional behind Goessel, allowing the team to advance to state competition, which will be Saturday in Leroy. Team members at regionals were Theo Kassebaum, Tom Oborny, Michal Baumgartner, Amy Makovec, Bessie Yang, and alternate Nastya Lesnikova.
