City park project moves forward

Managing editor

Marion City Council approved specifications Monday for replacing some sidewalks in Central Park.

Some parts of the sidewalk will have thicker concrete to accommodate trucks needed to reach utilities. There will be a wire mesh instead of rebar used in the concrete for stability and strength. The cement will be pumped from a truck on Main Street.

The sidewalks will have a broom finish to reduce slickness when wet.

Bids will be accepted for 30 days after published in the newspaper with work to be completed within 60 days of starting.

No support for lobbying

Kansas Municipal Utilities, of which the city is a member, had asked its members to consider paying an additional 10 to 20 percent of dues toward legislation efforts to prevent increases in utilities.

The annual fee was $2,121. The council did not make a motion, therefore no action was taken.

Appointments

Mayor Mary Olson asked the council to rescind the appointment of Nathan Hoffman from the Marion Planning Commission because he does not live within three miles of the city. Hoffman lives four miles.

Gary Lewis of Marion County Lake was appointed to serve.

Lewis also was appointed to serve as a city representative to Marion County Economic Development Council.

Sesquicentennial

Dick Varenhorst, chairman of the sesquicentennial committee, told the council that plans were being made for the city’s 150th anniversary in 2011. That year also will be the 150th anniversary for Kansas, 100th anniversary for Marion Old Settlers’ Day parade, and the 50th anniversary of Marion Historical Museum.
