Staff writer

The Cottonwood Valley 14-and-under all-stars lost, 5-0, to Humboldt on Monday to end their season at the state tournament in Altamont.

The tournament gave a most valuable player and WOW award to each team after each game.

Grif Case was the MVP of the semifinal game, pitching a complete game. He struck out five batters and gave up two earned runs, four hits, and two walks.

Shortstop Bret Voth won the WOW award for best defensive play by catching a line drive up the middle and then stepping on second base for an unassisted double play.

Cottonwood Valley won two games during the tournament.

The team defeated Parsons, 11-1, Friday night.

Bret Voth was the MVP of that contest with a 2-for-3 night at the plate, complete with four RBIs. First baseman Taylor Heidebrecht had the best play with an over-the-shoulder catch drifting into right field.

Cottonwood Valley defeated Newton, 7-5, in a second game Saturday.

Zac Lewman won MVP with a 2-for-3 game with the bat and a basket catch in right field.

Luke Steele had the best play with a catch at third base, where he tracked down a fly ball in foul territory.

Cottonwood Valley lost to Stevens County in the first game Saturday — the team Cottonwood Valley defeated in the state championship game a season earlier — 8-1.

Austin Pedersen was the MVP with two diving catches in center field.
