City park name changed -- on paper, anyway
With little fanfare, Marion City Council approved a resolution Monday evening, renaming Marion’s Central Park to Brooker Park. City administrator David Mayfield read the resolution, “officially” changing the name and becoming effective Dec. 1.
A labor of love
Gordon and Judy Pendergraft moved to Marion County Park and Lake in 1991, and every year they put up a spectacular display of Christmas decorations. The decorations, which are best viewed from the stone arch bridge on Lakeshore Drive, were all custom made.
Marion city to raise water rates
The cost of producing drinking water in Marion is more than the revenue collected from customers. And, like any responsible utility, the City of Marion is going to have to figure out how to offset those expenses.

Hilma Bartel
Hilma E. Bartel, 91, died Nov. 27, 2008, at Golden Living Center, Lansing. She was a homemaker and seamstress.
Sandra Drake
Sandra “Sandy” Drake, 64, Grand Lake, Okla., died Dec. 1, 2008, at her home. She retired in 1994 from Cessna Aircraft of Wichita and had lived in Florence.
Tiffiny Harper
Tiffiny R. “Tiff” Harper, 43, Florence, died Nov. 30, 2008. She was employed at Johnson’s General Store, Florence.
James Reid
James “Putt” Reid, 49, Vail, Colo., died Nov. 23, 2008. He was a maintenance worker.
Bert Sherbert
Bert Sherbert, 93, died Nov. 27, 2008, at Golden Living Center, Wakefield. He owned a construction business.
Walter Street
Walter E. “Gene” Street, 82, Marion, died Nov. 24, 2008 at Newman Regional Health Center, Emporia. Born Aug. 8, 1926 in rural Howard, he was the son of Walter and Martha (Frohm) Street.
Maxine Svitak
Maxine Svitak, 82, died Nov. 25, 2008, at Parkside Homes, Hillsboro. Born Dec. 28, 1925 near Antelope, she was the daughter of Fred and Alice (Hammer) Schimpf.
Bertha Helmer
Bertha Helmer died Nov. 30, 2008. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Marion Christian Church. A life’s sketch will be in next week’s edition.

It seemed to not be a big deal Monday evening when Marion City Council approved a resolution to “officially” change the name of Central Park to Brooker Park. It was presented by city officials as a simple, low key affair. No fuss, no muss.

Random Thoughts

Local students attend national cluster meeting in Dallas
Students from the Marion and Peabody-Burns chapters of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) participated Nov. 21-23 in a leadership conference in Dallas, Texas. Attendees participated in a weekend of training and sessions that challenged, informed, and motivated members and their advisers to become leaders through FCCLA.
Centre FFA members compete at Hillsboro
Centre FFA had a successful day Nov. 24 at the South Central District and Earl Wineinger Invitational Dairy Cattle Judging at Hillsboro. The senior A-team finished second overall in the district and third in the invitational competition. Cole Svoboda finished second in district and third in invitational. Other members of the team were Tanner Brunner, Brian Burhoop, and Alex Hajek.

Wildcat boys beat HMS twice
Marion Middle School A- and C-teams defeated Hillsboro Nov. 24, while the B-team fell by six in a hard-fought game. Jordan Hett and Jacob Harper hit key free throws in the final minute of the game, as the MMS A-team held on for a 41-38 victory. The team is 4-0 on the season.
MMS girls split six games on the week
Marion Middle School girls’ basketball teams were 3-3 in their final six games played in November. All three remain at or above .500. The Wildcats played Nov. 20 against Ellinwood and Nov. 24 against Hillsboro.
